The average American office isn’t what it used to be. Instead of morning staff meetings, employees are checking in online at home in their pajamas. In the office, employees are playing ping pong or enjoying free snacks in the kitchen. It’s not uncommon for music to be playing and an office pet to roam the halls begging for treats or a quick scratch on the head.

In 2015, millennials surpassed Generation X to become the largest share of the American workforce, according to Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. Millennials are known for being digital natives who want to work in a collaborative, flexible environment. But don’t be mistaken. Flexible hours and a chill company culture aren’t the only things millennials have demanded since entering and then dominating the workplace. Driven by their passions, this generation is well-educated, well-traveled and well aware of the options the world and their workplace can give them.

Purpose and a Paycheck

For decades, job satisfaction was defined as job security. For millennials, though, that isn’t the case. According to Inc.com, 64 percent of millennials would rather make $40,000 a year at a job they love than $100,000 a year at a job they don’t. This group seeks work that has meaning. To keep up with millennial expectations, organizations must have a mission and purpose that their young workforce aligns with. According to Deloitte’s 2016 Millennial Survey, these young professionals evaluate career opportunities based on:

  • Good work/life balance
  • Opportunities to progress in the company
  • Workplace flexibility
  • Meaningful work or alignment with company mission

According to the survey, millennials want their work to make a positive difference in people’s lives. So how can companies keep up? Follow Starbucks’ example. The company’s mission is “To inspire and nurture the human spirit — one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.”

Driven by Development

Guess what. Ping pong tables and free food don’t actually motivate this generation. While some people appreciate the push for a more lax company culture, most see these workplace perks as condescending distractions meant to pacify them instead of reward them for a job well done.

And they do want to do a good job. According to Jim Clifton, CEO of analytics and advice company Gallup, most millennials care more about purpose and personal development than workplace satisfaction. So while cereal bars and fancy latte machines may attract young talent, they won’t keep it without being coupled with clear individual development tracks. Organizations must provide opportunities for employees to progress and become leaders.

Constant Communication

This generation has adopted its own lexicon and constantly changes how they use it. As a digital generation, they consider smartphones to be an extension of themselves. Many millennials invest in the newest and best brands to help keep them up to date. Because they use their smartphones for, well, everything, it’s no wonder. These tiny devices (compared to bulky PCs or pagers of the past) now act as alarm clocks, cameras, planners, mobile wallets and personal computers.

But smartphones aren’t just for personal use. Millennials are comfortable tweeting company news, Skyping company calls and texting instead of chatting face-to-face with co-workers. They’re known for blogging about their feelings and documenting their every move. Though the New York Times identifies them as a group with a tendency to overshare, companies that embrace millennials’ love of smartphones and social media at work can reap extreme rewards.

According to Chris Altchek, founder of Mic, open and constant communication between employees helps the best ideas rise to the top. “It helps us to have everyone speak out … What that can feel like or sound like is rudeness,” he told the New York Times, “but I’d rather have a lot of people speaking their minds than a very controlled environment.”

Millennials aren’t just changing the culture of the workplace — they’re changing the definition of personal and professional success.
