India on the roads of technology, Heading to become ‘Science Territory’
India is heading towards new horizons of becoming ‘Science Territory’ by developing one after another scientific marvels. The onset test of Nirbhaya, a sub-sonic cruise missile, with 100 percent indigenous technology, has once again attracted huge appreciation for the Indian scientists. With the range of over 1000 kilometres, Nirbhaya will have the capacity to destruct enemy bastions in seconds. Though, this is not an end to the technological prowess of Indian scientists, they are mulling to take India as a nation to new heights in the realm spanning from space science to nuclear power. Though all work done by Indian scientists is worth appraisal, but the appreciation garnered by MOM is inexplicable in words, it made every individual Indian proud.
In the light of recent success of ‘Mangalayan’ or a Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), the indigenously built technology vindicated the prowess of India of not only establishing foothold among the top-and-powerful nations of the world, but also her competence in overpowering developing countries in their own field of technology. Besides being the cheapest Mars Mission Orbiter, Mangalayan also triumphed the feat in its very first attempt.
The work of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) not only received overwhelming appreciation from all corners of the globe for their stupendous work, but the wishes and appreciation also poured from American, European and Russian Space Agencies. The experts of the envy country, Pakistan also could not resist this feat of India. They employed it as a sarcastic tool to castigate their own country. On Social Networking Sites, it has been witnessed that snappish experts of Pakistan humiliate Prime Minister for spending huge amount of money on his personal tours. One such status reads, “We congratulate India for their success. The ISRO did a wonderful job of accomplishing Mars Mission in an amount that Pakistani Prime Minister spends on foreign tours.” This was followed by a streak of comments, some criticizing the status, while many affably admitting the success of India.
Now, the question arises, what inspired India to take indigenous technology to reach Mars, was it denial of developed countries sharing technology or was it determination of Indian Scientists to prove their mettle in the field of Space technology. If going by first proposition, the developed countries have no strong reason to deny technology to India, because India has impressed the international community with her conduct. When developed countries willingly shared nuclear technology with India, knowing that India will not misuse the same for harming other nations, why would they deny space technology to India, when its completely for global interest of understanding Mars and other space elements.
We have more reasons to justify, as developed and NSG signatory countries did not hesitate sharing nuclear technology despite the fact that India never signed any proliferation treaty. Indian former External Affairs Minister, Pranab Mukherjee said during a visit to Tokyo in 2007, “if Indian did not sign the NPT, it is not because its lack of commitment for non-proliferation, but because we consider NPT a flawed treaty.”
However, in 2006, United States Congress approved the United States-India peaceful Atomic Energy Cooperation Act, which allowed for the transfer of civilian nuclear material to India. Despite its status outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, India was granted these transaction on the basis of its clean non-proliferation record. Moreover in 2008, The IAEA approved the Indian Safeguards Agreement and was granted the waver at the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) at Vienna, Austria.
The success of MOM proves that future intergalactic missions are feasible on small budgets. India’s successful, low cost mars mission is a major milestone for the country’s space programme, with experts predicting that it could open the door to lucrative space deals with the US and Europe.
Now throwing light on second proposition, it becomes evident that the Indian scientists have innovated out-of-the box technology by not only sending cheapest space mission, but also flawless and one-go technology, which many senior and proficient countries in the field of technology has failed. India is becoming the fastest growing scientific country, with some innovation almost every month.
Besides, taking strides in the field of science, India is also pacing towards nuclear power, with joining the league of nation with most nuclear warheads and nuclear weapons, but unlike other nuclear aspiring nations, Indian efforts are not criticized, rather are appreciated.
International agencies and unions are appreciating efforts of India, only because they are versed with the Indian nuclear policy. They know that Indian foreign as well as nuclear policy will not pose any threat to neighbouring countries.
“India stands for the total elimination of all nuclear weapons and ushering in of a nuclear weapons free world. However, till such time as this is achieved, India will be constrained to keep her nuclear option open” – Indian Ministry of Defence, 1996-97in 2013 with the nuclear submarine INS Arihant, it has successfully tested its first ICBM, the Agni V, with a range of 5,000 kilometres, signed a deal to acquire 126 Rafale fighter bombers from France and soon there will be conformist nature gain a waiver from the NSG (Nuclear Suppliers Group) and a clean chit from the IAEA for a civilian nuclear pact with the United States. There is now a strong bid from the Indian side to gain membership into the NSG as well as a host of other export control regimes.
To conclude India’s stride towards technical and powerful nation, I may quote Jawahar Lal Nehru, who said, “Of course if we are compelled to use atomic energy for other purposes, possibly no pious sentiments of any of us will stop the nation from using it that way. But I do hope that our outlook in regard to this atomic energy is going to be a peaceful one…and not one of war and hatred.’ – Jawaharlal Nehru, Constituent Assembly, 1948.
