Published

on

Hundreds of armed protesters entered the Ukrainian Energy Ministry building in Kiev and blocked its main entrance. Meanwhile in the eastern city of Donetsk, thousands rallied in support of President Yanukovich’s government, protesting against the unrest. Ukraine has been seeing tensed environment for more than two months when Ukraine denied signing association agreement with European Union. The decision was followed by huge protests in the capital Kiev against government’s decision. Thousands of protesters gathered raised slogans carrying flags of Ukraine and European Union. The protests seemed to be coming under control when the government of Ukraine released a new law that sums up protesting as illegal, this caused immense protests coming to Kiev once again in a more violent avatar.

Ukraine’s energy minister, Eduard Stavytsky, arrived at the scene for discussion with the armed protesters and warned them that such violent acts could ruin the entire energy system of the country.

“There was an attempt to seize the building. About 100 people came, armed. I went to them and said that if they did not peacefully leave the building then the whole energy system of Ukraine could collapse,”Stavytsky told Reuters by telephone.

Protesters left the building but maintained the blockade at the entrance and requested everyone entering the building to prove its identity by showing the ministry ID as reported by Interfax. Despite the disturbance, ministry is reportedly continuing working.

The leader of the group (Spilna sprava or common cause), Aleksandr Danilyuk, claimed on his Facebook page that the action’s aim was to“show that Yanukovich does not control the situation in the country and is a threat to the lives and health of millions.”

Protests in kiev

Meanwhile, Ukraine has tightened the security around all the nuclear sites to protect protesters from raiding the sensitive areas.

A large part of the public in Ukraine has lost the trust in the government and majority of the former soviet republic wants to dive far right towards European Union. Public is fed up of Russian interference in almost all internal and external matters of Ukraine and believe being with European Union will give Ukraine not just better jobs and economic development, but also freedom from Russian interference. Russia, on the other hand believes a model can be developed where all Ukraine, Russia and European Union together can do trade and business, which is not acceptable by European Union.

Meanwhile, the current government is  getting some relief from the east where a large number of people have gathered on the street to support current Ukrainian president Yanukovhich. Eastern Ukraine has always been considered as pro Russia, whereas western Ukrainians have more anti Russia sentiments. While Easter Ukrainians still consider themselves as Ukrainian, a large population in South Ukrainian region of Crimea (Krim) people consider themselves as Russians and hold Russian passport.

pro government Donetsk protest

According to the channel Russia Today, the protests in Kiev could have been supported by foreign contingents from west, and the pro government protest in Donetsk (East Ukraine) is much larger than the protests going on in Kiev. In this media war between west and Russia, it is difficult to understand who is speaking the truth. Therefore, The World Reporter questioned around 2500 native Ukrainians belonging to different geographical locations across the length and breadth of Ukraine and formed a report which we will be sharing with you all very soon.
