3 Characteristics A Great Leader Must Have

Leadership is something that many strive for, but doesn’t always come naturally. While there are many different styles of leadership that offer varying approaches to managing decision making, employee relations and achieving outcomes, there are some traits that nearly every successful leader displays. Sometimes it’s instinct, others it’s a learned or adopted trait, or mannerism that helps shape the type of leader a person is.
Chandler Macleod are a leading human resources and people management company who are so passionate about the traits and characteristics, that they have developed state of the art psychometric assessments. This is part of their BestFit approach, matching employees to companies and roles. These kind of assessment strategies are great for determining what makes a great leader, and how to match their traits to a role. Here are the most common characteristics they’ve learned all leaders should have.
Decisiveness
Being a leader means making decisions – some of which may be difficult or unpopular. It is essential that a good, strong leader is able to make those tough decisions on their feet and with conviction, while taking into account the needs of both the business and the team. Teams look to their leader for guidance and direction, and they are more likely to trust and support someone who has faith in themselves. By the same token, a leader should also be able to acknowledge when they have made a bad judgement or decision. Mistakes don’t need to be dwelled on, but they do need to be recognised and rectified.
Be Humble & Relatable
Being the boss means that there does need to be some authority and a degree of separation, but it doesn’t need to be done in an arrogant or aloof way. Great leaders are able to talk and communicate with their staff effectively and for the team to truly perform to their best capacity, there needs to be earned respect. It is ok to be the authority figure, but it is never recommended that the power is lauded over the team.
Accountability
There is no I in Team; No Man Is an Island – there are dozens of adages that could be used to make this point but essentially, a leader must share in their team’s successes and failures or shortcomings. Leadership is about supporting, coaching and guiding the team to meet common objectives. Just as a good leader must be able to make sound decisions and remain down to earth, they must also take some of the ownership for the outcomes their team are achieving.
While some people naturally display more leadership qualities than others and are able to instinctively take the reigns and start steering a project, nearly every leadership characteristic can also be adopted by almost every person placed in the role. While leadership and mentoring can be a tricky topic to try to teach, knowing the habits, traits and characteristics that successful leaders display can give insight into simple, effective ways that someone can improve their own leadership skills.
