Apple Inc. kicked off its annual developers’ conference in San Francisco, where the company unveiled improvements to its mobile and desktop software. Apple announced Apple Music, IOS 9, Apple Watch and the latest El Capitan version of OS X in the conference.
According to Bloomberg’s article, Federighi started with the update to Apple’s Mac operating system OS X El Capitan. He showcased features such as a split-view option in windows, the ability to pin websites in Safari, and better Spotlight searches that include sports updates and weather predictions. Split-screen multitasking has been a much anticipated feature for the iPad that’s been rumored to be in the works for over a year. With Split-screen multitasking, it’s possible to use two different iOS apps on the same screen, so you can read a website while on a FaceTime call, or watch a video while composing a message in Mail, something that Microsoft Windows users are already familiar about. MacRumors gives us the information that on the new iPad’s on-screen keyboard, there’s a shortcut bar that houses editing tools like cut, copy, and paste. From the bar, it’s possible to quickly edit and format documents and text. Third-party apps are able to customize these tools to offer different options.
Apple also announced the rollout of iOS 9, which incorporates enhanced search and Siri. iOS 9 now comes with proactivity, which suggests music on the run, or apps that might be useful at specific times of day. This new proactive personal assistant follows Microsoft’s Cortana and Google Now.
There has been some news on the Music stage. Apple announced it’s going to change the way you experience music by launching a 24/7 live global radio station Beats 1 and Connect, which lets artists, whether on a major record label or unsigned, connect with fans through their music, pictures, lyrics and mix taps. However, users will still have to access their iTunes library. Apple Music will cost $9.99 a month. It will be organized according what you like and what genres you like listening to.
Now the big thing! Apple Watch! Tim Cook introduced new apps that are coming to the Apple Watch via updates to the software. Apple Watch is bringing new faces, features and functions. Users will be able to pick a photo from the Photos app to use as their watch background. The interesting thing is the Digital Crown that will let you to work comfortable with all information like sharing your activity achievements on Facebook, Twitter and through Messages and other options. Users can email directly from their wrist with smart replies, emojis and dictation.
We were all mildly amused by IOS 9 presentation. Interesting this is Siri integration. If you talk to someone in iMessages and ask Siri to remind you later about what you are talking about, it will scan this app and suggest appointments to add to Calendar and pull up photos of location and time with the sound of your voice. Something similar that Microsoft’s Cortana has been doing since its inception.
Apple has introduced significant updates to some apps such as News, Notes, Maps, iCloud Drive, Mail, Health, Carplay.
What’s next? We might see the new iPhone in two sizes. Apple is expected to introduce a new 4-inch model. There is also a rumor that Apple might add a new colour to its iPhone lineup. But it is far too early for us to make any guess.
