Top science fiction films of the past decade

Published

on

movie popcorn

With the world on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, many are seeking refuge in streaming platforms like 123movies to overcome boredom. Leaving aside great series such as Altered Carbon, Black Mirror or Rick and Morty, there are a wide variety of titles available that will make your quarantine the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in stories of robots, fast-paced action or just have a laugh with some of the iconic characters in cinematography. These are the best science fiction movies you can watch from the tranquility of your home.

Matrix

Why not start with the classics? All Matrix films are available in streaming, and now is the perfect time to review the Wachowski sisters’ saga, as the fourth installment is simmering. The reality we inhabit is a simulation, and only the chosen one, Neo, will be able to prevent the machines from taking complete control of humanity.

Inception

Today, nine years later, we are used to it. It has been discussed ad nauseam, referenced, imitated, parodied … Like any film whose strength depends on visual effects, its impact capacity has decreased. The flaws of Nolan’s cinema are more evident. However, despite everything, it still works like a clock. The concept is powerful, the narrative is very clever, it captures the music of Hans Zimmer, and the great deal led by Leonardo DiCaprio keeps the film alive at all times. It is a great fantastic adventure that does not stop and achieves amazing moments, never before seen in the cinema. For this reason, Inception deserves a place among the best of science fiction of the decade.

Blade Runner

A return to the classics, this time by Ridley Scott. Considered one of the best movies about artificial intelligence, the story follows the hints of Rick Deckard, an android analyst who must discover what is real and what is a lie in a future that seems to have lost its north.

Snowpierce

In his first foray into the science fiction genre, Korean Bong Joon-ho, responsible for the critically acclaimed and multi-scarred Parasites, presented a dark post-apocalyptic future in which humanity is on the brink of extinction following a new ice age. The only survivors are the passengers of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels the world at full speed powered by a perpetual motion engine and that serves the director to, as he would do years later in Parasites, reflect in all its harshness the class struggle.

Based on the Jean-Marc Rochette and Jacques Loeb comic and shot in English, the film – which was voted one of the Top 10 Independent Films of 2013 by the National Board of Review – features an impressive cast with names like those of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, Ed Harris and, of course, Song Kang-ho.

Circle

Disturbing film that combines science fiction with the psychological and psychoanalytic thriller. A group of unknown people participate in a macabre game in which they will have to choose who lives and who dies without knowing for sure what the rules are.

Back to the Future

Doc Brown and Marty McFly remain undeterred over time. Robert Zemeckis’ trilogy is one of the great gems of science fiction of the 80s, and is available in streaming. A series of unfortunate time travels will make the protagonists face their past and their future in which there will be no shortage of humor.

Annihilation

Except in the United States, Annihilation, Alex Garland’s second film after the praised Ex Machina, was not released in theaters. Paramount executives considered the film to be too philosophical, too ‘intellectual’, and ‘complicated’ for the general public … which does not mean that it would not have worked in cinema, as it is an intense crossover of Horror and existential science fiction with an ending open to multiple interpretations.

Minority Report

Directed by Steven Spielberg with Tom Cruise as the protagonist, Minority Report presents a society in which crimes are obsolete thanks to beings known as the precog, capable of seeing the murders before they happen.

I´m a Mother

In a future in which humanity believes that it is extinct, a girl has been raised by a robot with artificial intelligence. But everything that you believe to be true falls apart when another person appears on the ship in which they live.

The Platform

The Platform tells the story of a maximum security prison in which prisoners on the lower levels feed on the leftovers of the inhabitants of the upper floors. A man will do everything possible to change this situation.

Keeping Your Home In The Best Shape for As Long As Possible

Published

on

For most of us, our homes are our pride and joy. They’re the biggest investment we’re likely to make in our lives. They’re what we work towards day after day. You’re going to want to keep your home in the best shape possible to help maintain the value of your investment. They’re also a space that we can call our own. This is where we’ll let our hair down and relax after work or days out socialising. It’s where we’ll entertain our family and friends and build bonds with our nearest and dearest. So, you’re going to want to keep your home in good shape so it can be a comfortable safe haven for you and a space where you’re proud to bring the closest people in your life. But, just like anything we get good use out of, homes do have a habit of deteriorating. They don’t simply maintain themselves. It’s up to you to make sure that your home stays in the best shape as possible for as long as possible. Here are a few steps that you can take to achieve this.

Survey Your Home

People tend to only carry out surveys on homes in two instances. People who are selling their homes tend to carry out a survey to see what they need to fix about their property to get the highest asking price possible when they put it on the market. People who are buying homes tend to have surveys carried out on prospective properties to ensure that they’re getting their money’s worth and so that they can prepare themselves for any repair work they may be lumbered with if they do go ahead and purchase the property. But why not have a survey carried out on your own home? This will help to alert you to any problems developing within your home that you may need to tackle before issues worsen and genuinely damage your property.

Carry Out Repairs

Many of us ignore things that need to be repaired until they interfere with our lives so much that we can no longer sweep them under the carpet. But this is illogical. Ignoring problems that need to be fixed simply leaves them to get worse and worse, becoming more detrimental to our property and ultimately costing a whole lot more to fix. So, acknowledge issues and tackle them. Whether you need an electrician, plumber, bore drilling services or anything else. It’s much better to get started sooner rather than later!

Decorate Regularly

Many people only decorate when they’re changing the colour scheme or aesthetic of their home. But you should redecorate regularly regardless – even if it means just putting a fresh coat of the same colour paint over the existing coat. A fresh coat will help your home to remain feeling fresh and new. This is something you want to maintain, rather than letting your home become worn down and even dilapidated.

These small steps really can make all the difference. So, make sure to give a few a go!

What is Hydroponic Gardening and Why Everyone Should Consider Giving it a Try

Published

on

Gardening has always been a popular hobby. However, not everyone has a space to convert, while others may be reluctant to turn their little patch of grass into a planting area. This is where hydroponics comes in. Hydroponic gardening is perfect for people living in flats or homes without an outside space. But what is hydroponic gardening? And why should everyone consider giving hydroponic gardening a try?

An Overview of Hydroponic Gardening

Simply put, hydroponics is gardening without soil. Plants don’t actually need soil, but they do need light, water, vital nutrients, and mechanical support. This means you only need a way to deliver the nutrient solution the plants require. You could raise the plants floating in water or sitting in a moist soil substitute.

Now that we know a little more about hydroponic gardening, let’s take a look at some of its benefits.

You Can Raise Plants Almost Anywhere

You don’t have to set up the garden in the only window in the kitchen. Instead, you can set up a hydroponic system wherever you have space or where it is the most convenient. The hydroponics system delivers water and nutrients, and most of them have artificial lights that can replace natural light. That’s why you could raise your herb garden in the closet as well as the corner of the kitchen. You can

The Yield Will Probably Be Much Higher than Traditional Gardening

There are many reasons why hydroponics systems produce much more food than a garden plot. You’re raising the crops indoors, so you can raise herbs and vegetables year-round. You can control the nutrients and light levels, so you can adjust environmental parameters to maximize yield or flavour.

The plants don’t waste resources expanding their roots because everything is delivered directly to the plant. The plants also grow faster, allowing you to get your crop significantly sooner. For example, greens often grow twice as fast in a good hydroponic system as they do in soil, and the average crop is 30% larger.

It Is Less Work

You’re not very likely to find weeds growing in your hydroponics system. Your plants are protected from diseases that require soil to survive. They aren’t exposed to pests crawling on the ground, either. This eliminates the need to spray your crops with pesticides. You only have to pick up organic matter to prevent rotting from occurring near the plants. Furthermore, you can control the nutrients delivered to the plants. This simplifies the process of managing soil pH and eliminates the need to check on plants and add fertiliser. A side benefit of hydroponics systems is that you tend to get higher quality crops each and every time.

However, you have to make sure that you start with the right equipment. Suppliers like ProGrow, for instance, offer a variety of growing systems and kits that allow you to get everything you need in one place, no matter what you want to raise or how much space you have.

You’ll Use Fewer Resources

Most hydroponic gardens recirculate the water. This means they don’t need much water except what is required to replace that taken up by the plant’s roots. There’s very little water lost to evaporation. This is why hydroponics systems typically use less water per kilogram of produce produced than traditional gardening. Plants raised in hydroponic systems need relatively little space, too.

Hydroponics allows everyone to raise their own fresh, healthy food with minimal effort. So, we strongly suggest you start looking into it, and see how it could benefit you and your family.

Here’s Why Everyone Can Get Stacked At Home During Lockdown

Published

on

Has the lockdown been tough on your body? Without the gym to lean on, it can feel as if you don’t have space, specialist equipment, or motivation to maintain a hefty amount of muscle mass.

Sadly, this leads you to one conclusion – you’re going to lose all of your hard work from the past couple of years. Sure, the home workouts that everybody talks about are cool, but only if you have space and freedom to exercise at home. Not everybody owns their property, and not everybody has a spare room that doubles as a gym.

The good news is that you don’t require any of that stuff, and here are the reasons why.

Basic Exercises Are Your Friend

When you review home workouts, your eyes instantly gravitate to the exotic activities as they seem harder and more challenging. Considering that you want to get your pump on, you don’t want the session to be straightforward. However, the basic exercises feature on pretty much every home workout plan, and it’s because they’re effective and adaptable.

If, for example, you find push-ups and sit-ups too easy, you can try bicycle crunches or place a weight on your back as you press down and push back up. They’re also multifaceted activities and will train a range of muscles.

Reps, Reps, And More Reps

Do you find home workouts to be less stimulating than your gym sessions? Do you lack the motivation to build muscle in your bedroom or living room? If you are, all you have to do is up the number of repetitions. Suddenly, the constant pressure from the plank will rattle your bones until you can barely rest on your forearms without feeling a burn in every inch of your body.

Whether it’s core or strength exercises, two to three sets of ten reps each will make you reconsider your opinion on home workouts!

Readymade Equipment Already Exists

You’d love to perform a few of your gym sessions at home but lack the tools. The one thing about a gym is that it contains all the specialist equipment you require to focus on muscle groups and increase mass. Well, your home also does; you just don’t realize it yet. Take a look at every door frame and you’ll see a ledge for pull-ups. How to do a pull-up is your decision, but as long as you grip the top of the wood with plenty of friction, you’ll always have the option.

Some people go as far as installing a pull-up bar, which is a walk in the park with thanks to the video below.

You’re Always Connected To The Internet

If you’re wondering why this matters, it’s because home workouts can get boring if you stick with the same exercises. However, there are tons of different activities available on the internet, and you’ll always have a connection at home. As a result, you can research and prepare new sessions in minutes before going into the next room and smashing it out.

Come on – do you still think you can’t get stacked at home during the lockdown?!
