In the olden days, nursing was one of the most popular jobs, especially for women. Today, it seems to be a much less appealing proposition. But why is this, and what can be done to cure the world’s nursing shortage?

The situation: what’s really going on with nursing numbers?

If you’re not au fait with health news, you may be completely unaware of what’s going on in the health sector. The reality of the situation is that many countries are facing a nursing shortage. The demand for treatment has increased, and there simply aren’t enough nurses to do the work.

In the UK, there’s currently a shortage of around 20,000 nurses. Concerns have also been raised about the number of training applications, as numbers have dropped significantly since the government pulled bursaries for student nurses. Since plans to scrap bursaries were revealed, application numbers for nursing and midwifery courses have fallen by over 20 percent. There is a belief that putting a stop to bursaries will increase the number of places available, but what happens if there aren’t enough people wanting to take those places? There’s a great deal of uncertainty about the future, and many fear that a situation that is already grave could get even worse in the coming years. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of vacant nursing jobs increased by almost 50 percent. It’s not a case of there not being enough openings. The problem is that people don’t want them.

The nursing shortage is not a dilemma restricted to the UK by any means. This is a global issue, which is causing anxiety for leaders and health ministers in many countries. In Australia, research suggests that up to a third of nursing professionals are considering finding alternative jobs because of modern working conditions. A survey by the Monash Business School also highlighted a looming crisis in numbers, with the majority of midwives and nurses currently working in Australia aged over 47 years. As the population ages, the gap between supply demand is only going to increase, especially when you consider that large numbers of nurses will be reaching retirement age in the next 20 years.

The trend is also apparent in the US where it is estimated that the shortage of caregivers could reach one million by the year 2030. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that 1.2 million nursing vacancies will become available in the next five years. Russia is lacking half the nurses it needs and Japan will need an extra 800,000 nurses in the next decade.

What is causing nursing shortages?

There’s no single cause of the global nursing shortage. Perhaps the most significant factor is the aging population. Today, people are living longer than ever before, and this is taking its toll on health services. People live for longer, and the gap between the old and young is increasing all the time. There aren’t enough people who have the training and expertise to care for the aging population, and this contributes to delays and increased pressure on nurses. There’s also the issue of working conditions. Many nurses work in pressured settings where they are required to work long hours in a job that tests both their mental and physical strength. When there aren’t enough people to share the load, work becomes increasingly difficult. One nurse in Australia said that she was considering quitting because her job had become dangerous. She was asked to work with students who didn’t have the relevant qualifications or experience, and she was under increasing pressure. In essence, nurses are being asked to do the same job, but without the same level of support. Many feel that they’re being pushed to the limits and forced into corners where they’re putting their own health, as well as that of their patients, at risk.

There are plenty of jobs available, but the worry is that fewer people are going into nursing. The same benefits exist, but there’s a whole raft of disadvantages in the modern world. Yes, it’s a satisfying, rewarding job, but it’s also incredibly stressful, and you’re expected to work long, antisocial hours for a moderate wage.

What can be done?

With advances in technology and healthcare, people are only going to live longer, and this means that the issue of the aging population isn’t going anywhere. Governments have to recognize this and take steps to prepare for the future, as well as coping with demand at present. The number of nurses needs to increase, and quickly. To do this, the proposition of becoming a nurse should be made more attractive. There also needs to be support for trainees and registered nurses. Nobody should be forced into a situation where they feel that they can’t do their job safely.

Pay is an issue for many young people who are considering their career options. In relation to other jobs, nurses are paid poorly, especially considering the importance of the role they play, and the hours they are expected to do.

It is hoped that better public health education and technological advances will improve standards of health in the coming years. However, it’s unlikely that they provide a solution to such a significant shortfall. Nurses want better working conditions, and young people need to be convinced of the benefits of a career in nursing. Many see that they could earn a lot more money by working fewer hours in a less stressful job, and this is a problem that is going to be tough to crack.

When you feel ill, you probably don’t think twice about going to a doctor or seeing a nurse. But what would happen if you needed treatment, which wasn’t available because there weren’t enough members of staff on duty? The demand for medical care is increasing all the time, and simultaneously, fewer young people are interested in nursing as a career. People are living longer, and there aren’t enough qualified nurses to care for them. There’s a global crisis, which could become even more profound in the next decade or so if governments don’t act now.

Once you get into the habit of doing this, you will see that it actually does make a significant difference when it comes to drifting off and enjoying a good night of rest.
