Crete: The Foodies Guide – Travel and Food
Sponsored Post
Greece is synonymous with good food and drink. Eating and drinking are part of Greek culture and go hand-in-hand with the music and dancing that it is known for. Crete is no exception to this rule, and offers its own twist on Grecian recipes and flavours unique to island life. Crete should be well on the radar of any foody and offers huge rewards to those that venture here to eat. With many cheap holidays to Crete available from Thomas Cook, this year could be the year you get to experience beautiful Cretan food drizzled in local olive oil.
Food
The Cretan diet is also commonly referred to as the Mediterranean diet and is adapted worldwide for its health and nutritional benefits. Meals usually consist of fish, fruit, vegetables, and of course olive oil. Nearly every home on the island has its own olive trees, and olives are eaten regularly as mezes as well as made into oil. Meat is saved for special occasions, and eaten sparingly at other times. Cheese too is used in moderation but local feta is definitely worth trying if you get the chance, it’s much nicer than you can buy in the supermarket. A typical dessert in Crete is locally farmed honey from one of the many beehives across the island, atop thick yoghurt – a favourite here.
Tsikoudia is the drink of choice in Crete and is often given in restaurants after you have finished eating. Also known as Raki, Tsikoudia is made from left over distilled wine and is typically quite strong at 20-40%. Due to laws on alchohol tax this drink is only made for a single 48 hour period each year in distilleries. As it is a wine based drink the predominant taste is grapes, making it a great accompaniment for mezes of feta, olives or cold cuts of meat. The Cretans don’t tend to drink without eating so mezes with a tipple are a common occurrence.
You can’t go to a Greek Island and not indulge in the local food and drink, they are key to Cretan identity and, most of all, delicious! Book a holiday to Crete today and take your taste buds on tour.
