Workplace safety is a major concern throughout all industries. For entrepreneurs, those accidents and resulting injury claims can hit profit margins hard. For employees, though, being kept safe could be the difference between life and death.
Financially and morally, creating safer has been a priority throughout the modern business world. Statistics show that deaths and major accidents are on the decline, which surely indicates a step in the right direction. Conversely, though, the increase of personal injury court cases would suggest otherwise.
There are many factors to consider, especially as the landscape has undergone such vast changes in recent times. Perhaps the most obvious difference is that the internet has allowed for remote-based working. Given that many employees are no longer even needed in the company workspace, it’s not hard to see why those health and safety issues have dropped.
Having said that, regulations across the board have certainly improved. Those tighter rulings have forced employers to take note. Perhaps more importantly, though, workers now have a greater understanding of how to act following a situation. Whether it’s heading to their unions or conducting research through the internet doesn’t matter. That added education empowers workers, subsequently forcing businesses to pay even greater attention.
Improvements in technology have made a noticeable impact also. Machinery can now be used to complete most factory jobs while most modern equipment boasts safety mechanisms too. Moreover, the quality of safety clothing and accessories is better than ever, which can protect workers in various scenarios.
There are still a number of environments where dangers still exist. The growth of construction accidents is particularly worrying given the overall decrease. In truth, though, the industries should be doing more to prevent those issues altogether.
Unfortunately, with over eight in every 10 new businesses failing, modern entrepreneurs don’t have time to waste. Consequently, staff training often suffers. In turn, this can undo a lot of the good work gained from improved facilities.
Nonetheless, physical accidents are certainly less likely than in previous generations. Emotional and mental damage is arguably a more common factor, though. Workplace bullying is an issue. Perhaps more tellingly, the economic climates mean that many workers are still in debt despite working up to 60 hours per week. With this in mind, it’s no surprise to see the regularity of depression and other disorders shoot through the roof.
Generally speaking, however, the world has become a far safer place. Those progressions have been mirrored by the modern working environments. Technology doesn’t only make environments safer to use, but they often complete the dangerous aspects without the need for human risk. Ultimately, the increase in court cases is not an indication of increased danger. Instead, it simply shows that workers are now more educated and better protected when an issue does surface.
Removing workplace accidents completely is an unrealistic fantasy. But the threats are now far fewer than in previous generations. As long as employers and employees both take responsibility for their actions, the dangers should be minimal.
