Exploring the historic city of Marrakesh on your next cruise holiday
It is natural to feel a million miles from home as you disembark at such a frantic and frenzied city, but this is by no means a bad thing. Marrakesh enables you to embrace traditional Moroccan culture and learn about the region’s fascinating past in the best way possible.
What’s more, this captivating and compelling destination can be discovered on a cruise. Take a day trip to Marrakesh from the popular Moroccan beach resort of Agadir as part of the Thomson Cruises Colourful Coasts itinerary, which also calls in at the Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, La Palma, Madeira and Lanzarote.
But with less than 24 hours to explore Marrakesh, the following historic and cultural delights simply have to be on your to-do list.
Get lost in the souks
This labyrinth of covered market stalls and shops can feel a bit intimidating at first, but if you have a sense of adventure and are brave enough to haggle, plenty of bargains can be found. From traditional jewellery and handcrafted carpets to sensual spices and suspicious looking medicinal lotions, there is a range of intriguing souvenirs available.
Wander around Jemaa el Fna (Place of the Dead)
This bustling square, situated in the heart of the medina (old town), plays host to some of Marrakesh’s most alluring sights and sounds. Centuries ago, farmers and tradesmen used to meet here but today, snake charmers, juice sellers and local musicians all vie for your devoted attention. If you’re here long enough, this place really comes to life after the sun goes down.
Visit the Koutoubia Mosque
You’re bound to use this imposing landmark as a reference point during your time in Marrakesh, as it stands proudly above the city skyline. Dating back to the 12th century, the Koutoubia Mosque’s architecture, which features beautifully carved facades and archways, is its crowning glory. Be sure to wander round the nearby gardens too, which will give you some much needed peace and tranquillity.
Thankfully, all of these attractions are within close proximity of each other and will enable you to experience a genuine slice of life in Marrakesh, even if you’re only here for a day.
