6 of the Most Beautiful Beaches in Portugal
When choosing a beach holiday a wide variety of places come to mind, but there are few countries in the world that can keep up with the options that Portugal holds for its visitors. With access to the serenity of secluded coves, long stretches of powdery golden sand, as well as the more wild and vast expanses of the Atlantic coast, Portugal is a beach destination that has something for everyone. Here are just 6 of the country’s most scenic spots.
1. Praia da Guincho
Situated in the Parque National de Sintra-Cascais, this western beach has remained relatively untouched over the years, and its rolling coastal dunes framed by black cliffs make for vast and expansive seaside views. A favourite for surfers and windsurfers alike, the local area is replete with excellent seafood restaurants, and the nearby town of Cascais is a nice mix of locals and tourists.

2. Praia da Marinha
Found nestled into cliffs and rocky outcrops at the bottom of a stretch of stairs, this beach might be Portugal’s iconic postcard spot. Golden cliffs and pristine sands give beach-goers the sensation of complete isolation, and the nearby coves and naturally forming grottos can be visited by boat or sometimes swam to at low tide.

3. Praia da Rocha
If you’re trying to escape the crowds then this beach is a perfect opportunity to get away. A limestone headland reaches out into the sea forming a natural breakwater that separates the beach into two sections, allowing visitors to choose the less crowded stretch of sand. The cliffs and coves that form the beach’s backdrop also provide a sense of seclusion, making it ideal for anyone looking for some quiet time to crack open a book and soak in some rays.

4. Praia do Portinho da Arrábida
Another beach that lies in a national park, Portinho da Arrábida is a small bay within Serra Arrábida National Parc, which sits just south of the country’s capital of Lisbon. A great option for anyone looking to escape from the city, the beautiful green foliage and hills that back the white sands and pebbles of this beach create a rich contrast to the azure waters. This is also a great place to head for anyone looking to sail or kayak.

5. Praia do Carvalho
This small gem is ideal for beach-goers who enjoy a little time in the water, as the steep cliffs that frame the cove reach out into the sea and shield swimmers and sunbathers alike from any coastal winds. Keep in mind that this beach is usually empty in low season, and even in peak tourism times is far less crowded than other Algarve spots.

6. Praia da Ursa
One of Portugal’s most notable but hidden beauties, this beach sits to the west of Lisbon and just to the north of Praia da Guincho. You’ll have to earn a visit to Praia da Ursa, as it’s located at the end of a steep hike, but the views and seclusion will more than reward you.
So while you may have had one or two beaches in mind for your next vacation, a trip through Portugal can bring you a wealth of seaside experiences.
