Streets of India: the stories that never end
Any street in India begins as an example. These are areas where unwinding and chatter happens. Where the pace of life is something you’d have to indulge in, where the aroma of street food fills your lungs and the taste of warm jalebis tickle your taste buds. People are in flocks, a few walking slowly, the others running fast or move in unison. It is the same where an open canal piles up fodder for the roaming stray cattle. Where a cutting chai would keep up conversations, where a lazy cat would sleep over your parked scooter- A prefect concoction for an experience of a lifetime; something that only a street in India can give you!

This piece could be called a street-photo montage and that is because words are never enough for Indian streets – the experiences rare and changes rapidly, in every street. With the different kind of streets we have in this melting pot of a country, could we ask for more?

Rickshaws, trolleys, scooters, TVS mopeds, hand-carts and cycles dot the streets every now and then. They are common sights in every small street in India. To commute within streets that spread over acres (like Crawford, Mumbai), scooters and hand pulled rickshaws are preferred. However, many of us know; the essence of a street is with each step one takes and the stride that leads to many novel discoveries!

All these streets, apart from their visual plethora, stand as areas where people make their livelihoods. In an economy like India, where even the buying and selling begins with bargains and barter systems, the process of trading needs accomplices to go with! Explains the reasons of unofficial discounts, lack of bills, tasty street food, chai-wallaas and chaat-wallaas.

A few streets that have that nostalgic effect in you, as though it refuses to move ahead with time; like Gokarna main street. This street is the heart of Gokarna town towards the bus stand, and has one known ATM, even today. Cows romp all over the street and hawkers engross in their sales making it a little bit bustling.

The calm Gokarna Street

Hampi Street
When some like the street of Fort Kochi, boasts of vintage buildings and playgrounds, being a perfect pot of both east and west held by graffiti and cozy cafes along side the rickety road, a few other streets dedicate themselves to traditions and clutch it, thorough out the inches of it. A perfect example would be the Chidambaram main street or Trivandrum temple street.

Probably the streets are here to stay; they just evoke a sense of belonging into our heart walls that just clutches tight to its roots. The same strong bond that brings people closer, that gives you the joy called an ice-cream on a balmy day, the venue that helps you bond with friends and the same that brings out the bargainer in you, for your goodies! The one and only solid and vivid thread, it’s the streets that make us the country that we are!

Which is your favourite street in India, that same one you’d visit again and again? Just for the smell, the sales and the feel that it gives?
