Parking your worldly belongings at the back of a camper van accompanied by friends or family, some great tunes and the freedom of the road ahead is an exciting experience and most campervan fans cannot contain their joy and may simply take off without some considerations. Australia and New Zealand are some of the best destinations for campervan holidays. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your campervan holiday.
Choose The Right Campervan
A campervan will be your home for the next few days or weeks, so you need to know how to choose the right van for you depending on the number of people travelling along with you, whether you have kids or not. If you are travelling more than two people, check out the travel arrangement. The vans come in all shapes and sizes (check out these Spaceships campervans you can hire!) and you might want a van with a high roof if you are tall so that you can actually stand inside. In New Zealand, temperatures can be so low especially during winter, hence ensure that you have heaters from the campervan companies and you could also bring along some warm clothing. Be sure to have some good backpacker insurance so you’re covered if you have issues.
Plan Your Itinerary
Both Australia and New Zealand have a lot of scenic destinations to see and most people want to see as much as possible within the scheduled time. If you allow as little as seven days to get from Cairns to Sydney or from renting a campervan in Christchurch to get to Auckland, the results may be unsatisfactory and you may not feel like you are on holiday at all. Even in New Zealand where every turn rewards you with magical scenic beauty it is easy to miss out on much, the best thing to do is to take it slow and take it all in. You do not necessarily have to move every day, if you arrive at a place with a lot of attractions, you may consider stopping over and explore and probably leave the next day.
Finding Places To Stay And Camping
Australia and New Zealand are very well prepared for this kind of holiday hence there are numerous campsites all across the regions. The sites vary from high end with swimming pools, beautiful manicured gardens, power hook ups, TVs and game facilities, internet connections, laundry facilities and well equipped clean kitchens, to the very basic facilities limited to long drop toilets. In New Zealand the latter are usually found in remote yet scenic areas.
Take Advantage Of Free Camping
Free camping is appealing to most travelers in campervans as you can pull over in a scenic location and own it for the night. However even in sparsely populated areas such as New Zealand and Australia there is still protocol to follow to conserve the environment. Do not go camping in a van without a toilet as locals in both Australia and New Zealand take pride in their pristine nature.
Prepare Your Own Meals
Stock up with snacks and groceries from local supermarkets rather than on service stations on route as it is much cheaper. Prepare your own meals either using the campsites communal kitchen or in the van depending on where you are and save up on costs of eating out in cafes or restaurants.
