Published

on

Orchha, in Madhya Pradesh (Central Province) state of India is a small town situated at the bank of the River Betwa, One of the major tributary of the river Yamuna. Embellished by the beautiful Cenotaphs (Chhatri) forts and temple, the town is approximately 20 Km away from Jhansi.

Orchha known for its serene and spiritual environment attracts most of the tourists from the month of September to March. This is also the time when the River Betwa is in its full flow. Even though Orchha has been our favourite destination, it is still very much unknown to the world.

We had chosen the month of October-November to make a visit to this place. However at the end of the trip we suffered a system crash, we lost most of the photos that we had clicked and articles that we had written over the vacations. This caused us so much problems in the schedule and running of the website, so the delay in the article.

How to Reach Orchha

Orchha is nearly 20KM away from the city of Jhansi which is well connected to the Indian Railways and Highway network, although Orchha has its own railway station, but is served by very few trains. There is a beautiful highway from Jhansi to Orchha, during spring season, it is beautifully accompanied by the flowered plants and trees along the sides of the roads. You can either take taxi or you may hire an auto Rikshaw which should charge nearly ₹150 per trip from the Jhansi Railway station. The City of Jhansi has no Airport, the nearest airport is in Gwalior and Khajuraho. Which are slightly far and are not served by many flights, hence a train to Jhansi would be the better option.

Things to Do in Orchha

Aarti in Raja Ram Temple: The main temple in Orchha, which is relatively the newer one is devoted to Lord Rama. You can visit the temple and watch or sing the Aarti which starts occurs in the morning and in the evening. The temple is accompanied by the market where you can find Indian clothes and artificial jewellery in a very less cost. Temple is also surrounded by many Indian style low cost restaurants that provide food as tasty as in the resorts.

Rafting at River Betwa: Rafting in Orchha is for the adventurous people, however it is not as famous as the Rafting at Rishikesh or in River Brahmputra in India. The River is not very violent. There are only 2-3 rafts. most of the time it will be like boating. The reason people go for it is the astonishing view of the city which they get from the river. For Rafting you need to visit Betwa Retreat resort run by MP state govt’s tourism department.

Things to see in Orchha

Orchha is the city of Cenotaphs, temples and forts. It is for the people who love to admire the art, architecture, and the spirituality.

Raj Mahal (Palace) is Situated to the right of the quadrangle, this palace was built in the 17th century by Madhukar Shah, the deeply religious predecessor of Bir Singh Ju Deo. The plain exteriors, crowned by chhatris, give way to interiors with exquisite murals, boldly colourful on a variety of religious themes. Get a good guide inside here to take you all over the complex, including locked rooms, for a tip.

The Jahangir Mahal (Palace) is built on a rectangular base and is relieved by a circular tower at each corner surmounted by a dome, while two lines of graceful balconies supported on brackets mark the central storeys. The roof is crowned by eight large fluted domes, with smaller domes between them, connected by an ornamental balustrade. Built by Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo in the 17th century to commemorate the visit of Emperor Jehangir to Orchha. Its strong lines are counterbalanced by delicate chhatris and trellis work, the whole conveying an effect of extraordinary richness.

Chaturbhuj Temple is Built upon a massive stone platform and reached by a steep flight of steps, the temple was specially constructed to enshrine the image of Rama that remained in the Ram Raja Temple. Lotus emblems and other symbols of religious significance provide the delicate exterior ornamentation. Within, the sanctum is chastely plain with high, vaulted walls emphasizing its deep sanctity. Find the hidden stairs to the roof for a view of the entire area.

Laxminarayan Temple is A flagstone path links this temple with the Ram Raja Temple. The style is an interesting synthesis of fort and temple moulds. The interiors contain the most exquisite of Orchha’s wall paintings. Covering the walls and ceiling of three halls, these murals are vibrant compositions and cover a variety of spiritual and secular subjects. They are in excellent state of preservation, with the colours retaining their vivid quality.

Cenotaphs These Cenotaphs or Chhatri are situated right at the bank of the River Betwa, however it is unknown for what reasons these were constructed, but they certainly attract your attentions. One of the best point to see them is to go to the other side of the river from the road bridge, sit down on the river rocks, dip your feet inside the running water have a cup of tea and watch the sun setting behind the Cenotaphs.

River Betwa Unlike the image that people have about the Indian rivers, Betwa is very clean and has a good volume of flowing water. You can dive and swim. The view of the city from the river is astonishing. Every Morning and Evening Hindu priests come to worship the river which has played an important role in preserving and nurturing the flora and fauna of the region.

Where to stay in Orchha

Orchha is a well developed tourist town. There are hotels and resorts in the range of all budgets. Resorts having 3 to 5 stars of facilities are extremely cheap here compared to the similar hotels and resorts in other cities. you can find a room ranging from ₹2400 to ₹7500 for a room per night for two. Bundelkhand River Side, Orchha Resort, Amar Mahal and Betwa Retreat are some of the most famous resorts, out of those, Betwa Retreat is run by Madhya Pradesh govt’s tourism department and is very much comparable to other private players.
